Jonathan Swift was born in 1667. He died on 19th October 1745. His parents were English but he was brought up in Ireland - in great poverty. As a young man he became secretary to Sir William Temple, and made good use of the fine library at Moor Park. In 1694 he went back to Ireland and became a clergyman. He eventually became Dead of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Swift interested himself for years in violent political controversies, and wrote many pamphlets attacking the Whigs. But he did not realize his ambitions and became an embittered man. ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ and ‘The Tale of a Tub’ are two of the greatest satires in the English Language.
